Review of Jacky Oruc’s spring hafla

by Karen

At a nice new shiny venue, The Weston Rooms in Gainsborough, Jacky kicked off her 2010 season of hafla’s for her students.  Apart from the cavernous room and fantastic dance floor, The Weston Rooms are easy to get to and provide a lovely venue with a very reasonably priced bar and friendly staff.  But to the meat of the matter and our reason for being here - the dancers.

A good dance card with established names and a number of group dancers were before us.  As always I am fascinated by my dance sisters ability to be inventive and to display their hard work with such enthusiasm but special mention must go to two particular dancers for tonight.

Firstly Hannah.  What can I say? Hannah has definitely gone over to the dark side and it was stunning!  Having embraced tribal style, Hannah is experimenting with fusion and for tonight had put together a strangely dark but superbly executed fusion piece to Marc Almonds Tainted Love.  As Jacky said afterwards, weren’t we a little scared, but also fascinated? You go girl!

Secondly special mention must go to a new name the Malikah Dancers.  Singularly known as Rose, Ellen and Karen, they wowed us with a lovely graceful and hypnotic dance with Wings.  Imagine 3 dancers dancing simultaneously with Wings - awesome.

As always we all had a fabulous night and Jacky’s hard work always shows through.  Her next one will be at the same venue on 30 July, so if you have a free evening, get along there
