Zubaidah
Keen to push on with my out of (Lincolnshire) county trips, Friday 20 November took me over to Sheffield to watch the Zubaidah hafla held for the first time in Beighton. If you ignore the route there (the A57 used to be so straight forward!) the venue was great. A huge hall, well-lit and serviced with 2 bars, and lots of car parking. A suitable crowd was gathered and there were a variety of dance styles on show. Lyn’s classes seem to be going from strength to strength and her choreo’s show her students to their best. Towards the back of the hall, where I was, it was a little disheartening to be amongst a few tables of ladies who clearly were not dancers and had just come for a night out. Nothing wrong in that, but they persisted in talking loudly all the time and hardly even bothered to watch. For me that was quite disrespectful and, if you are dancing it can be quite unnerving. Still at least they were towards the back, so the performers weren’t put off.
Obviously a first for Beighton but not for Zubaidah, who organised everything like clockwork.
