Jacky Oruc's Solo Virgins Hafla
31 July 2009

As we all know, getting up to dance is always nerve-wracking. I’ve been performing (as opposed to boogying) for 4 years or so now, but I still get a tic or an unexpected hand shimmy sometimes, and I know I’m not alone! Dancing in a group is less scary, unless it’s your very first time, and if the whole group is making its debut, then the fear factor can be quite high. So cast your minds back everyone, to the first time you ever danced, in a group or alone, and remember how you felt. Then clap and cheer like the audience did for you that time and support your sisters as they do the scariest thing in the world: Dance, alone, in front of all your friends.

I’m filled with admiration for the brave ladies who chose Jacky’s solo virgins hafla for their debut.  They gave us a varied programme including different styles, from tribal fusion to Meleya, a wide selection of music, beautiful costumes and stunning props, lovely dancing, inspired choreography and the best gift of all, their lovely smiles. Well done, and see you again to Janet, Sara, Rowena, Julia from Nottingham, and Claire from Worksop.

It wasn’t all soloists of course, can you imagine a Misterton hafla without Dans Satam, or Bellicious (Jackys students) or the Aradia Dancers (my lovely students)? And of course, Jackys guests, Suburban Fusion (some of the BellyKissAngels). A new feature is our very own local tribal troupe Andraste making their debut without Pauline and treating us to their drumming circle. Way to go girls! We also had Connies students, the Evening Stars making their debut after only a few weeks classes.

Jacky has promised to have another Solo Virgins hafla next year, so if any of you budding Dina’s out there need a goal there it is. And if you have a friend in your dance group who needs a little encouragement, encourage her! It is every bit as scary as you think, but once its over, you will want to do it again. Promise!
